MARU Hi-Fi is a restaurant and listening bar at 10 Union Street in Newcastle West, built around Japan's jazz kissa tradition. Co-founded by Andrew Coughlan and Joel Hillier, it moves each night from dinner service into a listening bar, with guest DJ sets and live neo soul and jazz performances. The room was acoustically designed with Sound NSW and acoustic consultants, and its hand-built sound system pairs custom Pioneer turntables, a Condesa mixer, modified McIntosh amplifiers and Tannoy Westminster Royal speakers with a curated vinyl collection. Guests can pick records or bring their own. It seats up to 50, holds up to 66 including standing, and is open Wednesday to Sunday.
