About
The green is 12 acres of grass between Galle Road and the Indian Ocean, running about half a kilometre along the seafront. The Dutch put cannon here, and Governor Ward ordered the promenade in 1856. It was finished three years later. Ceylon's first game of rugby was played on this ground in 1879, and horses raced across it until 1893. The country marks its national day here every 4 February. Kite flyers and food carts fill it at weekends.
